Chewelah A to Z – Update January 2023
The Chewelah A to Z Stewardship Project encompasses approximately 58,358 acres in Stevens and Pend Oreille Counties, WA. The project area has been heavily logged. The EA noted 75% of large trees are candidates for removal and 60% of the Dry Douglas-fir forest (32,191 acres) will be logged. KRCG notified the FS we would file a complaint if large trees proposed to be logged were not cut. The FS agreed to modify in this project included retain all trees >21 dbh. Several monitoring visits this project area indicated large tree retention was being followed.
Status: Final EA, Decision and FONSI. KRCG filed Objection. Forest Service did a supplemental analysis and agreed to apply Eastside Screens (re Sanpoil Case) to the project and to protect all tree species > 20.9” dbh.
