Restoration work begins on Big Lick Trail
Group works to restore historic trail in the Kettle River Range
Despite intermittent rain showers, the tradition of caring for the trails in our Colville National Forest was continued this weekend as volunteers with the Kettle Range Conservation Group tackled the job of clearing the first few miles of the Big Lick Trail of downed trees, overgrown brush, noxious weeds and repairing sections of damaged trail tread. Maintenance of the Big Lick Trail was initiated by the Kettle Range Conservation Group in 1991 as volunteers began the work to keep the trail in good condition.
Big Lick Trail in the Colville National Forest, Trail #30, is a non-motorized trail offering expansive views of the Okanogan Highlands and San Poil and Kettle River valleys as it gently winds up the North Fork of St. Peter Creek to connect with the Kettle Crest & Pacific Northwest Trail – a National Scenic Trail – and several other trails such as Ryan Cabin Trail and Leona Loop Trail.
To access the trail follow Aeneas Creek Road to FSR#566 about six miles turning right on to FSR #260 leads to the Big Lick trailhead. From its beginning this trail offers expansive views, impressive stands of old growth forests, wildflowers and native grasses as well as opportunities for viewing wildlife including many bird species.
The Big Lick Trial is a great asset to our community and is a destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking the peace, fresh air and solitude that wilderness offers. The Big Lick Trail is featured in many hiking and backpacking books and websites. More work is needed before the full length of this trail is cleared and repaired. This and other opportunities to sign up and volunteer to help maintain local trails is needed.
